Today, the Texas police force and an entire community mourn the loss of a true hero.

Rex, the last surviving K9 from the historic July 4th flood rescue mission, was peacefully laid to rest after 16 years of unwavering service, loyalty, and courage. His name is etched into the hearts of those he served—and those he saved.

The 2009 flood was one of the most devastating natural disasters to strike the region. Torrents of water tore through neighborhoods, sweeping away cars, homes, and hope. Amid the chaos, a specialized K9 unit was deployed to assist in rescue efforts. At the center of that unit was a young German Shepherd named Rex—strong, focused, and fearless.

Over the course of four harrowing days, Rex braved dangerous currents, navigated collapsed structures, and located more than a dozen missing persons. One story still echoes through the department’s halls: a child trapped beneath debris, his cries drowned out by rushing water. Rex found him—just in time. That boy is now 21 years old. And he credits Rex with the reason he’s alive today.

Through the years that followed, Rex continued to serve with quiet distinction. From search-and-rescue missions to missing persons cases, he worked tirelessly without complaint. He trained younger K9s. He comforted victims. And in every moment, he reminded the world what it means to serve with heart.

But time spares no one—not even heroes.

In recent months, Rex’s health declined. Arthritis made each step harder. His once-bright eyes grew cloudy. And though he still perked up at the sound of a whistle, everyone knew his final mission was near.

This morning, surrounded by those who loved him—his longtime handler Officer Daryl Quinn, fellow K9s, and department staff—Rex was given a final salute. He was laid to rest with honors, his badge draped gently across his blanket, and his favorite toy beside him.

Flags across the county were lowered to half-mast.
