Today, the final chapter closed on one of the most courageous rescue stories in modern U.S. history. Rex, the last surviving K9 officer involved in the harrowing July 4th flood rescue mission in Texas, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his handler and fellow officers, after 16 extraordinary years of fearless service to the Texas State Police.
But Rex was more than just a police dog. He was a symbol of unwavering bravery, loyalty, and sacrifice — a silent warrior who never asked for glory but earned it every time he ran into chaos when others ran away.
🐾 The Flood That Changed Everything
On July 4th, 2009, Texas was battered by one of the most catastrophic floods in its history. Entire neighborhoods were swallowed. Power lines collapsed. Cars floated like paper. Screams echoed through the rising waters — and amid it all, Rex charged in.
Assigned to the K9 Search and Rescue Unit, Rex led the charge through collapsing houses, murky floodwater, and unstable terrain. Over the course of 48 relentless hours, he located and helped rescue 27 individuals, including children trapped in an attic and an elderly veteran stuck beneath debris.
“He didn’t hesitate. He just knew what to do,” said Officer Tyler Maddox, Rex’s longtime handler. “There were times I thought we both wouldn’t make it out alive. But Rex… he pulled me through.”
🎖️ A Lifetime of Service
After that legendary operation, Rex continued to serve — detecting explosives, locating missing persons, and protecting communities across Texas. Despite injuries sustained during his early years, Rex never left duty, earning medals, commendations, and the eternal respect of all who knew him.
He retired in 2021, but remained a public figure. Schools invited him. Veterans saluted him. Children wrote him letters.
“He became more than a dog. He became a story we told to remind ourselves what courage looks like,” said Police Chief Ramirez during a solemn press conference this morning.
